
May 12th, 2012 - Derek returned to Lawrenceburg Speedway (Lawrenceburg, Indiana) on Saturday night for a Weekly Racing Series Event. With twenty-three entries on hand Groomer advanced from the seventh starting spot in his heat race to a second place finish, which locked him into the sixth starting spot for the main event. In the feature he would quickly work his way into the top five before ultimately advancing to a third place finish behind race winner, Joey Kramer, and Doug Adkins. May 5th, 2012 - Derek entered a single event over the weekend as he traveled to Lawrenceburg Speedway (Lawrenceburg, Indiana) for a Weekly Racing Series Event. Twenty-one entries entered the event, and Groomer began the evening by blasting from the second starting spot to claim the win in the first heat. Via his heat race performance he locked into the third starting spot for the feature. Early in the main event he would battle for the lead before a broken spindle relegated him to a 12th place finish in the final rundown. Full results are available at www.LawrenceburgSpeedway.com.
April 28th, 2012 - The team set out to enter a pair of events over the weekend with thefirst event being held on Friday night at Bloomington Speedway (Bloomington, Indiana). Twenty-two entries were on hand for the Weekly Racing Series Event, and Groomer began his night by charging to the win in the second heat race, which locked him into the fifth starting spot for the main event. On Saturday night the team was slated to compete at Lawrenceburg Speedway (Lawrenceburg, Indiana) in a Weekly Racing Series Event, but rain forced the program to be canceled.
April 22nd, 2012 - Derek made his first trip of the 2012 season to the Terre Haute Action Track (Terre Haute, Indiana) on Saturday night for a Weekly Racing Series Event. A solid field of Open Wheel Modifieds were on hand for the event on the historic, 1/2 mile oval. The night started well for Groomer as he finished second in his heat race to lock into the fourth starting position for the main event. April 21st, 2012 - After seeing Friday night's scheduled program at Bloomington Speedway (Bloomington, Indiana) nixed by rain the team made the trip to Lawrenceburg Speedway (Lawrenceburg, Indiana) for a Weekly Racing Series Event on Saturday night. It would prove to be a great night for the team as Derek raced to his first feature win of the 2012 season!
With 15 cars in action the night began well for Groomer as he powered to the win in his heat race to claim the pole position for the feature event with John Rhoades joining him on the front row. As the race went green Derek shot to a lead that he would never relinquish as he went on to claim his first win of the 2012 campaign! April 14th, 2012 - On Saturday evening the team was slated to compete in the season opener for Lawrenceburg Speedway (Lawrenceburg, Indiana) but Mother Nature had other ideas as a poor forecast forced the cancellation of the event. As a result the team traveled to Cedar Ridge Speedway (Morgantown, Kentucky) for the Bluegrass Bash. Twenty-seven cars entered the event, and after setting fast-time in his group he finished third, which locked him into the eighth starting spot for the feature. April 13th, 2012 - Friday night found the team in action at Bloomington Speedway (Bloomington, Indiana) in a Weekly Racing Series Event. With twenty cars on hand the night would start great for Derek as he raced from his third starting position to claim the heat race win, which locked him into the pole starting spot for the feature with Clint Demoss joining him on the front row. Derek would battle for the lead for the first half of the event before bad luck found him in the form of a right rear, flat tire, which forced him to the back of the field. April 7th, 2012 - Derek was finally able to get his family-owned, #d48 Groomer Motorsports/Larry Shaw Race Car back on the track on Saturday night as he entered a Weekly Racing Series Event at Lincoln Park Speedway (Putnamville, Indiana). Twenty-eight cars entered the event, and Groomer began the night by winning his heat race to lock into the third starting spot for the feature event. Early in the feature he would have to go to the tail of the field, but mounted a great charge through the pack on his way to a third place finish at the checkered flag behind race winner, Matt Bex, and Wes McClara. March 24th, 2012 - After a month since last being in action Derek entered the #51 Lucky Motorsports Open Wheel Modified in the 15th Annual Indiana Ice Breaker on Saturday night at Brownstown Speedway (Brownstown, Indiana). A talent-laden field of 46 competitors registered for action, and in his heat race Groomer would start third, but battled mechanical issues to a tenth place finish. The mechanical issues would force Derek to scratch from the balance of the program.
Despite the bad luck, Derek would like to thank Richard Lucky for allowing him to race the car over the weekend. He hopes to have his family-owned entry ready for this Saturday's event at Brownstown Speedway. Full results are available at www.BrownstownSpeedway.com.
March 21st, 2012 - After missing the first few weeks of the season around home due to mechanical woes from Florida, Derek was eager to get back behind the wheel of his #D48 entry this weekend, but additional issues have been discovered, which will delay his entry being ready. However, all is not lost as Richard Lucky has stepped up to provide his #51 Lucky Motorsports/Larry Shaw by Groomer entry to Derek for this weekend as Groomer will pilot it in the 15th Annual Indiana Ice Breaker at Brownstown Speedway (Brownstown, Indiana). Derek and everyone at Groomer Motorsports are very thankful for the generosity of Richard Lucky, and Groomer hopes to repay him by putting the car in victory lane this weekend!
February 21st, 2012 - The final UMP Open Wheel Modified portion of the 41st Annual UNOH DIRTCar Nationals was held on Tuesday night at Volusia Speedway Park. Forty-five Open Wheel Modifieds entered the event, and the field was divided into three, separate features. With the lineups being determined by the point's from throughout the week, Derek earned the 9th starting spot for his 20 lap feature. As the race went green he began marching his way forward, and by the race's midway point he was up to the fifth spot. With five laps remaining he raced his way into the fourth position before bad luck found him again as mechanical woes forced him to retire from the event. He was credited with a tenth place finish. February 20th, 2012 - After seeing his brother have his weekend come to an end after an accident on Friday, Derek put his brother's powerplant in his #d48 Larry Shaw Race Car for Monday's finale for the $5,000-to-win, Gator Championship. Due to his struggles in preliminary action, Groomer started on the tail of a b-main. Despite starting 14th on the grid, he advanced to a 5th place finish. Unfortunately only the top two cars moved onto the main event, so Derek's night came to an early end. Full results are available at www.DIRTCarNationals.com.
February 18th, 2012 - Derek was able to find another powerplant as he returned to action in the 41st Annual UNOH DIRTCar Nationals on Saturday night. The night would start well for Groomer as he qualified fastest in his group to earn the pole position for his heat race. February 14th, 2012 - Sometimes in racing, things don't go as planned, and other times they just go terrible. Unfortunately for Derek the latter was true in the opener of the 41st Annual UNOH DIRTCar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Florida). Seventy-three Open Wheel Modifieds entered the $1,000-to-win event at the 1/2 mile oval. In hot laps as Groomer was getting his #D48 Larry Shaw Race Car dialed in he would see his powerplant go up in smoke, ending his night. February 4th, 2012 - Derek and the team are currently busy putting the final touches on their #D48 Open Wheel Modified as they prepare for the DIRTCar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park (Deleon Springs, Florida).
