Groomer Goes Wire-to-Wire in Slingin’ Dirt Debut at Brownstown
Banks $3,000 Super Late Model Victory
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (April 28, 2026) — Derek Groomer left little doubt in the Slingin’ Dirt Late Model Series debut at Brownstown Speedway, turning a front-row starting spot into a $3,000 victory with a commanding performance.
The Bloomington, Indiana native seized control at the outset and set the pace all 35 laps, pacing all 35 laps to secure his first win of the 2026 season and the fifth Super Late Model triumph of his career.
Groomer briefly had his hands full navigating lapped traffic, allowing overall fast qualifier Jared Bailey to close in during the mid-race stages, but the Bloomington driver maintained control to seal the flag-to-flag victory.
“(Nearly losing the lead on lap 11) was definitely my fault, I shouldn’t have ran in there on them lapped cars like that. You gotta drive these things white-knuckled for 35 laps and it wore me out a little bit,” Groomer said. “You never get old, I’m a kid at heart and I always will be no matter what my age is. I’ll run with the best of them and I’ll give the best of ‘em hell if they want it.”
After Friday’s scheduled opener at Circle City Raceway was washed out, Groomer turned his attention to Brownstown Speedway, located just over an hour from his Bloomington-based shop.
He qualified third-fastest overall and followed with a heat race victory to secure a front-row starting position for the feature. From there, Groomer capitalized on the opportunity, fending off challenges in traffic to claim the convincing victory.
